Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

In response to the rapidly evolving COVID-19 situation, the Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association (MSFCA) is actively working on strategies to assist fire departments across the state. Ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of firefighters, their families, and the public is our top priority during this disaster.

We recognize that COVID-19 has the potential to impact the entire state and may significantly impact the day-to-day operations of fire departments. Below is a summary of the work currently underway by the MSFCA.

UPDATES

COVID-19 Task Force

On Friday, March 13, 2020, the MSFCA Executive Committee authorized the creation of a COVID-19 Task Force to assist with statewide fire service collaboration, communication, and support. The Task Force is comprised of senior fire service leaders from across the state and will liaison directly with the State Fire Marshal Division and other state offices as needed.

The MSFCA has a long and distinguished history of providing support to fire departments across the state. This will remain our top priority. Please remember that MSFCA resources such as the FAST teams, regional mutual aid, and Intrastate Mutual Aid are available to assist.

Fire service leaders can contact the Task Force directly at [email protected].

Requests for FAST teams or mutual aid should continue to be routed through the Duty Officer or other existing channels. However, we believe resources may become limited due to needs in home communities and in multiple locations throughout state.

Communication with the Department of Public Safety

I have been in direct contact with Commissioner Harrington. On Friday night, Commissioner Harrington advised that the Department of Public Safety was able to push through a request for more than $1 million for supplies and equipment as part of the Minnesota Department of Health bill. An additional $10 million federal funding request has also been submitted.

The MSFCA will continue to work with the Department of Public Safety and the State Fire Marshal Division to provide fire departments resources and logistical support. The MSFCA will also actively advocate for legislation and funding to support fire departments during this crisis.

MSFCA Events

For the safety of all speakers, attendees, vendors and communities, it was decided to postpone the Duluth Fire Officer and Training Officer School and the Annual Conference due to the COVID-19 virus.

The MSFCA will also be proactive in evaluating all of our future events and programs.
